Sun Parasol
When did tanned skin first become more popular than pale?

I am doing a report on trends in culture for school, and when certain trends that were once-unheard of became commonplace.
I remember reading in History once that high class women would carry parasols to shield them from sun and maintain their pale skin, as to not look like working-class women.
And I think it was in the 1970s that tanning beds first caught on, and more celebrities have been tanning since then. But does any one have a source for this info? I’ve been unable to find one online.

Tan skin started becoming more desirable almost exactly with the introduction of small swimwear in the 1940s and 1950s, like the bikini. More skin means more exposure to the sun, and the tan was seen as the result of having enough time and boldness to sunbathe.
