It’s a short story, not a novel.
1. Mr. Hooper had a veil over his face. He kept the veil on his face everyday.
2. The town citizens haven’t seen his face and they are wondering if he is crazy. The inference that I would make is that people will be talking about the veil on his face.
3. For me, I think that he wants to be different than other people.
4. Many people are creeped out. They didn’t understand why he has a veil on his face.
5. Hawthorne is using a metaphor to describe the black on the minister’s face and death. The color black usually symbolizes death.
6. It was a distraction in the wedding.
7. He means that everybody has a black veil, or something to hide.
8. We all have our secrets and sins. Nobody is completely perfect and good. Everybody has secrets and sins that we want to hide from other people.
9. They understand why he want the veil on his face. At first, they didn’t understand why he covered his face. But when they saw Mr. Hooper dying, they wanted to remove the veil off his face. Mr. Hooper told them the reason why he wanted to cover his face. Then they understood why he had the veil over his face.
